It’s Fall y’all! Fall is such a beautiful and comfy time of year when the weather gets mild, and we can break out our stylish sweaters and boots! Personally, I get excited by the prospect of wearing more than shorts, tank tops and flip flops! I live in Southern California, and we spend most of the year dressing like it’s summer. However, in late October we start to get great weather that allows us to slightly increase the number of layers we wear. It’s not much, but I’ll take it!
While I’m excited about dressing myself for the coming season, I’m, also excited about dressing my home! Fall is a time to get cozy and I LOVE to make my space feel warm and inviting while celebrating the season. Most people will take out the orange place mats, put a bunch of pumpkins everywhere and light up pumpkin spice candles. However, that is NOT my style. I have nothing against those who like to decorate that way, but as a designer, when it comes to holiday décor, I like to keep it classy not camp.
For this post, I picked out some of the trends I’m seeing in Autumn décor that fall (pun intended) in line with the overall trends for 2022 and maintain a classy look.
1. The Great Pumpkin
This year you can include pumpkins in your décor in a way that looks elevated. Use pumpkin decor in ceramic with a uniform finish like white, black, or gray. These pumpkins from Crate and Barrel are a great example.
Another great way to display them is in a natural material like this pumpkin in a natural jute material.
2. A Midas “Touch”
Gold has made a comeback in home décor in general, and you can certainly use it in your fall decorations. HOWEVER, let’s not overdo it. You can use gold and brass in small ways that bring a decadent holiday feel to your décor or diner parties without looking like you’re going for baroque. A great trend is glassware with a gold rim. It brings a fall holiday celebratory feel to the dinner table and can complement a more neutral timeless backdrop.
You can also bring in gold/brass in candle holders where appropriate.
3. Bring it Black
Black is a major part of the 2022 design trends, and it has carried over to Fall décor. Adding black always ups the sophistication in décor and that applies to Fall decorating. Incorporating Black décor with ceramics is a great way to add an earthy fall feel with a classy look.
Black metal items are also a great accent to add to your fall décor. These black iron candle holders are a great example.
4. Something Shady
Tinted glass is a trend this fall that can bring the shades of fall into your décor in a subtle way. You can incorporate tinted glass items in burnt sienna, brown, olive or black to change the feel of your space without being too loud. Great items would be tinted lamps, decorative vases, or cocktail glasses.
5. Wildly Cozy
Yes! It’s ok to include some fur accents! YAY! BUT, only with a few key accents. Try using a throw blanket or a throw pillow on the bed or couch. Try not to use both at the same time. That’s when it can get to be too much. If you use fur, (I prefer faux fur) try to mix it with a material of a different texture like a chunky knit throw blanket or a something in a natural linen texture. Mixing the fur accents with other textures is the key to making it look more curated.
6. Tossed up
A mix of quality throw pillows is a great look that adds coziness and dimension to your fall décor. Mix up different cozy neutrals and add a pop of something in a fall color for interest. This pic below is a great example of a mix throw pillows that look both cozy and intentional.
7. Scents that make Sense
I know it’s the season of pumpkin spice, but I personally do not like my home smelling like food. It’s a weird thing I know! I prefer cleaner scents in my home. For fall, there are many natural scents that can give your home the scent of a fresh fall breeze. Scents like teakwood and tobacco, eucalyptus, or leather are outdoorsy smells that remind you of the fall cozy season. I love the scented candle below from Leanne Ford for Crate and Barrel. It brings in a pop of brass and the fresh scent of warm cedar.
I know that different people have different tastes and traditions when it comes to decorating for the fall. However, for those who want to create a more neutral yet trendy look for their home or those that want that curated interior design look, I think these 7 decor tips will help!
